What does a dispatcher do?

A truck dispatcher finds freight for a driver or a trucking company (carrier), negotiates the rate with the broker and plans the route. The job is fully remote and can be done from Georgia.

Main duties

  • Find loads for their driver.
  • Plan the route: where the driver goes and which way they take.
  • Calculate the rate (acceptable for the driver / for the company).
  • Call the locations the driver is heading to and brief them.
  • Work with documents.
  • Control (avoiding fraudulent brokers and problems for the driver / the company).

You will get all the other details in the course.

A typical day

A dispatcher works both remotely and from an office. A typical working day depends on the company they will work for. On average the schedule runs from 16:00–17:00 to 02:00–03:00, with exceptions, Monday through Saturday.

Note: the schedule can vary. If the dispatcher has booked a load in advance, they may not need to work until 02:00. The same goes for working days: if the dispatcher has given the driver a load in advance, they can take 1 or several days off, but should stay attentive and ready for an unexpected problem.
